Embroidered Polo Shirts: Fabric, Thread Colour, Placement and Care

Watered, sun-dried and washed twice a week: a work polo earns its keep on a Saturday like this.

Good embroidered polo shirts come down to four things you can check before you order: a pique fabric that holds stitches flat, a logo drawn for thread, a thread colour that stands out on the polo, and care that keeps the stitching sharp. Ours are CVC pique, 65% combed cotton and 35% polyester, embroidered from 20 pieces per design, from $29.95 per polo.

Buyers often compare custom embroidered polos on price, then find the logo puckering three months later. Here is what we check when we put custom embroidery on polo shirts, using our custom embroidered polo shirts collection. Still choosing between thread and print? Read our embroidered vs sublimated polo comparison first.

What Makes Good Embroidered Polo Shirts?

A good embroidered polo has a stable fabric under the logo, a design simplified for thread, a thread colour with real contrast against the shirt, and a placement sized for the spot. Get those four right and the logo looks the same on wash fifty as on day one.

Embroidery is thread stitched into the fabric, so shirt and logo have to work together. A thin, loose knit lets a dense logo pull the fabric into ripples (puckering), and thread too close to the polo colour disappears from a few feet away. Every polo in our range is cut, sewn and embroidered in Vietnam by our production team, so fabric, collar and logo are planned together.

Comparing the best polos for embroidery from different suppliers? Ask what the fabric blend is, whether it is pique or jersey, and who does the stitching. The best embroidered polo shirts are cotton-rich pique, made and embroidered by the same team. Start with the Solid Custom Embroidered Polo if you want the classic look.

The Fabric: Why CVC Pique Holds Embroidery Well

Our embroidered polos use a CVC pique knit, 65% combed cotton and 35% polyester. Pique has a firm, textured surface that gives stitches something to grip, the cotton keeps it soft, and the polyester helps it hold its shape and colour through regular washing.

A pique polo is knitted with a small raised, honeycomb-like texture. It is heavier and more stable than a smooth jersey tee, so a chest logo sits flat instead of dragging the knit inward. CVC stands for chief value cotton: the blend is mostly cotton, so it feels like a classic cotton polo rather than a slick sports shirt.

Combed cotton is smoother and pills less than ordinary cotton, and the polyester helps the polo resist shrinking and fading through frequent washing. We do not add spandex. Sizes run XS to 3XL, in short sleeve styles and a long sleeve option for cooler sites.

How Logo Embroidery Looks Up Close, and How It Wears

Embroidery is raised, textured and catches the light, so a logo looks stitched rather than printed. There is no surface layer to crack or peel, but it needs bold shapes: very fine lines, tiny text and soft gradients do not translate well into thread.

Before stitching, your logo is digitized: turned into a stitch file that sets the direction and order of every stitch. We do this free when you add your logo to an order. Solid shapes become fill stitches, letters become satin stitches, and the finished logo has a slight relief you can feel.

As general guidance, text under about 0.25 inch tall gets hard to read once stitched, because thread is thicker than a printed line and the pique texture swallows fine detail. Gradients and photos have to be simplified into solid colour. With a long tagline, we usually suggest keeping only the mark and company name on the chest.

Embroidery outlasts a heat transfer logo on a cotton-rich polo: there is no film to crack, and the colour is in the thread. Our guide to embroidery, DTF print and sublimation compares the decoration methods side by side.

Thread Colour on Light and Dark Polos

Choose thread for contrast first and brand colour second. On light polos, dark thread reads best; on dark polos, white, light grey or a bright brand colour reads best. Tonal thread close to the shirt colour looks quiet and refined, but it disappears from a distance.

Polo colour Thread that reads well Use with care
White, light grey Navy, black, a strong brand colour Yellow, pale grey, light gold
Navy, black White, light grey, gold, a bright brand colour Dark red, dark green, navy
Charcoal White, silver grey, a bright brand colour Black, mid grey
Forest green, burgundy White, cream, gold Black and colours of similar depth
Royal blue White, light grey, yellow Navy, dark purple

A logo can use up to 4 thread colours per design. Send your Pantone code and we match the thread as closely as thread allows, shown on the free mockup. A common trap: black logo parts on a navy polo vanish on fabric, so switch them to white or grey on dark polos.

Where to Put the Logo: Placement Options and Sizes

Left chest is the standard spot for a company logo. You can also embroider the right chest, the back of the collar or a sleeve. On our polos, chest logos run up to 3.5 inches wide, the back collar up to 2.8 inches and the sleeve up to 3.9 inches, each 1.2 to 1.6 inches tall.

Placement Max width Height Typical use
Left or right chest 3.5 in (9 cm) 1.2 to 1.6 in (3 to 4 cm) Company logo on the left; staff name or role on the right
Back of collar 2.8 in (7 cm) 1.2 to 1.6 in (3 to 4 cm) Website, short message or small mark
Sleeve 3.9 in (10 cm) 1.2 to 1.6 in (3 to 4 cm) Second logo, club crest, flag

Wide logos suit the chest best; tall, stacked logos lose detail. A common setup for work polo shirts embroidered for a team: logo on the left chest, a name on the right. Golf polo shirts embroidered for a club often add a sleeve crest. Our complete guide to custom polo shirts with logo shows more combinations.

Minimums: 20 Pieces, or 50 With a Striped Collar

Embroidered polos start at 20 pieces per design. Polos whose collar has two or more separated stripes start at 50. For fewer than 20 people, our sublimated all over print polo starts at 1 piece.

Collar Example from our range Minimum
Plain or single-colour collar Solid Custom Embroidered Polo 20 pieces
One edge line plus one collar colour Long Sleeve Polo, white tipping on forest green 20 pieces
Two or more separated stripes Stripe Tipped Polo, red and white stripes on navy 50 pieces
Any design, under 20 people Custom AOP Polo (sublimated, not embroidered) 1 piece

The minimum order quantity comes from cutting and sewing each polo for your order, and a striped collar takes extra setup. Have 30 people? Order 50 striped polos and keep spares, or pick a single-colour collar and order 30. For a group under 20, the Custom AOP Polo is printed edge to edge at $35.95, in men's and women's types, S to 4XL: a flat print rather than raised thread.

Care: How to Wash Embroidered Polos So the Logo Lasts

Wash inside out below 30°C (86°F), skip bleach and harsh detergent, tumble dry low below 40°C (104°F), and never iron directly on the embroidery. Most tired-looking logos are caused by heat and friction, not by the stitching itself.

Inside out, the logo cannot rub against zips, denim and towels in the drum, which is what fuzzes thread. Cool water protects the cotton and the thread colour, while bleach dulls coloured thread first. High heat in the dryer can shrink the cotton slightly around the stitching, which is where puckering after washing usually starts.

To iron, press the back of the logo on low heat. Trim a loose thread rather than pulling it. For a uniform programme, print these rules on a card that goes out with each polo: staff will follow four short lines, not a care label.

How Much Do Custom Embroidered Polo Shirts Cost?

Our embroidered polos are listed from $29.95 for size XS up to $41.95 for 3XL, and the fully custom polo from $34.95 to $46.95. Logo digitizing, the mockup and up to 4 thread colours are included with no setup fees, and the per-piece price drops on larger orders.

The list price changes by size, not by logo. Long sleeve polos cost the same as short sleeves. To choose the body, collar and contrast colours yourself, the Fully Custom Embroidered Polo lets you design your own around your brand.

The simplest way to save money on embroidered company polo shirts is one design across the whole team, because minimums and volume pricing both work per design. Send your quantity and sizes through our contact page and we will quote the volume price before you commit.
